‘CMU Trekking’ leads new students to worship at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Academic Year 2023.
Counting down to the tradition of CMU Trekking. Every year, CMU students participate in an activity that involves leading new students on a trek up the mountain to worship at Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep. This year, it falls on November 18th, 2023. The tradition of ‘CMU Trekking’ is an annual event organized by the Chiang Mai University Student Union since the establishment of the university in 1964 (B.E. 2507). This tradition involves new students, current students, alumni, and participants walking together to worship at Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, a sacred site for Chiang Mai locals and residents. Covering a distance of over 12 kilometers, this ritual of welcoming newcomers has been creatively and consistently practiced throughout the years.

In the year 2023, the Chiang Mai University Student Union has chosen a segment of Chiang Mai’s society from around a hundred years ago as the theme for this year’s event. The goal is to showcase the beauty of the city’s history during the 20th century, a pivotal era when Chiang Mai transitioned from traditional times to the new world. This transformation resulted from changes in governance systems, transportation, the economy, as well as advancements in science and technology. The intention is to transmit local wisdom and history while simultaneously promoting and conserving creative aspects. At the same time, there is an emphasis on promoting and preserving the creative Lanna aspects of Chiang Mai University.
The procession of the trekking temple ritual involves representatives from various faculties inviting sacred objects to theWat Phrathat Doi Suthep. This is followed by individual faculty processions, according to the following schedule.

- Point 1: Up to Doi Suthep
- Time 04:00 – 07:00 a.m.: get in the vehicle at the parking lot of the Arts Center
- Time 09:30 – 03:30 p.m.: get in the vehicle at the fountain square, Dhamma Hall
- Point 2: Chiang Mai Forest Fire Control Station – Doi Suthep
- Starts at 04:30 a.m.
- Service closes at 03:30 p.m.
- Point 3: Parking Area, Village 3, Doi Suthep – Return to CMU
- Starts at 08:30 a.m.
- Service closes at 04:00 p.m.
